Speak with an ExpertThe Blueprint of Global Trade: What are Incoterms?
Incoterms® (International Commercial Terms) are the eleven universally recognized rules that define the precise responsibilities of sellers and buyers in international trade contracts. These rules clarify the critical points of risk transfer, cost allocation, and liability – from the moment goods leave a warehouse until they reach their final destination.
- Cost Allocation: Who pays for freight, insurance, and duties?
- Point of Delivery: Where does the seller's obligation end?
- Risk Transfer: At what exact point does the buyer assume hazard?
Critical Incoterms for Modern Logistics
EXW - Ex Works
The seller holds minimum responsibility, merely making the goods available at their warehouse or worksite. The buyer carries the maximum burden, assuming all costs and risks from the moment the goods are collected at the seller's premises.
FOB - Free On Board
Specific to sea and inland waterway transport. The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel nominated by the buyer. Risk transfers as soon as the goods are loaded. The buyer handled the main carriage costs.
CIF - Cost, Insurance, and Freight
The seller pays for the carriage and insurance to the named port of destination. However, risk transfers to the buyer as soon as the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the origin port. Perfect for sellers wanting to manage the transit process.
DDP - Delivered Duty Paid
The ultimate white-glove service for the buyer. The seller bears all risks and costs, including import clearance and taxes, to bring the goods to the destination. Austin World Transportation specializes in managing these complex DDP chains.
